7 insane records that Bayer Leverkusen & Xabi Alonso can break this season

Bayer Leverkusen are flying high at the top of the Bundesliga right now and Xabi Alonso’s side are on the verge of breaking some insane Bundesliga records.

Bayern Munich have been the dominant force in German football for over a decade as they have won the last 11 league titles. However, it looks increasingly likely that they could fall short this season.

Leverkusen currently boast an eight-point lead at the top of the table and they don’t look like slowing down any time soon.

They have by far the best defensive record in the league, having only conceded 15 goals in 22 matches so far. Alonso’s side also remain the only unbeaten side in Europe’s top five leagues at this stage of the season.

While Leverkusen are undoubtedly in a great position in the league, Alonso is firmly keeping his feet on the ground for the time being.

“We’ll talk in May,” Alonso told reporters when asked about Leverkusen’s title chances. “We have to be realistic and keep our feet on the ground.

“I have a great team. We have a lot of energy and that’s the key. There is no secret. The players believe and that’s what we want.”

Given their superb record in the league this season, it’s no wonder that Liverpool are sniffing around Alonso as they search for Jurgen Klopp’s replacement.

We’ve taken a closer look at Bayer Leverkusen this season and have identified seven insane records that the club could break this season.

– Alonso’s side could become the first side in Bundesliga history to go an entire season unbeaten. If they manage to remain unbeaten in their remaining 12 games, they will set this historic record.

– Following their latest win against Heidenheim, Leverkusen equalled Bayern’s all-time German football record for the longest unbeaten run across all competitions (34 games). If they avoid defeat against Mainz, they will surpass this record.

– Based on their current points per game record, the club are projected to finish the season with 90 points. This would be the second-highest points tally achieved in Bundesliga history. Only Bayern Munich in 2012-13 finished with a higher tally (91 points).

– The club are well on their way to their best-ever points tally. Leverkusen’s best-ever Bundesliga season came in 1999-00 as they picked up 73 points. As things stand, they are projected to beat that tally by a whopping 17 points.

– Alonso’s side could make history by becoming the first club to ever win the Bundesliga, Europa League and DFB-Pokal in the same season.

– If they can maintain their scoring rate of 2.59 goals per game, Leverkusen will score 88 league goals this season. That would be the highest-ever tally that the club has ever managed in a top-flight season.

– Having only conceded 15 goals so far, they are only projected to concede 23 goals this season. That would be the fewest number of goals that Leverkusen have ever conceded in a Bundesliga season.
